Republic Bank (Ghana) PLC Commissions Mechanized Borehole Projects in Pwalugu and Dingoni to Improve Access to Clean Water

Accra, Ghana, May 28, 2026 – Republic Bank (Ghana) PLC has successfully inaugurated two mechanized borehole water projects in Pwalugu in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region and Dingoni in the Tolon District of the Northern Region as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) commitment to improving access to clean and safe drinking water for underserved communities.

The inauguration ceremonies, held separately on May 25 and May 26, 2026, in Pwalugu and Dingoni, respectively, attracted government officials, traditional rulers, executives of Republic Bank, community members, school children, and other stakeholders.

The projects were undertaken under the Bank’s Power to Make A Difference (PMAD) initiative and align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6, which focuses on clean water and sanitation.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Pwalugu, the Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Donatus Akamugri Atanga, commended Republic Bank for what he described as a life-changing intervention for the people of the community. “This project is not just about water; it is a symbol of hope, dignity, improved public health, and enhanced livelihoods for the people of Pwalugu,” he stated. “It is also a clear example of how private-public partnerships can positively impact lives at the grassroots level and contribute to the socio-economic development of our people.”

The District Chief Executive for Talensi District, Hon. John Millim Namwomya, expressed appreciation to the Bank for fulfilling its promise following the sod-cutting ceremony held in December 2025. “We are grateful to Republic Bank for honouring its commitment to the people of Talensi. I encourage the community to take good care of the facility to ensure its long-term sustainability,” he said.

Also speaking at the event, the Municipal Chief Executive for Bolgatanga, Hon. Roland Atanga Ayoo, applauded the Bank for contributing meaningfully towards the attainment of SDG 6. “Republic Bank has demonstrated a strong commitment to improving lives through access to clean water. The community must take ownership of this facility and maintain it properly for future generations,” he noted.

The Chief of Pwalugu, Naba Ayine Akpiisi Kurugu, described the successful drilling of the borehole as remarkable, recalling previous unsuccessful attempts by contractors in the area. “Many people attempted this project without success, but Republic Bank persevered and drilled beyond 110 metres to finally secure water for our people. This sacrifice will never be forgotten,” he remarked.

Managing Director of Republic Bank (Ghana) PLC, Dr. Benjamin Dzoboku, explained that the intervention was inspired by a documentary by Joy News Upper East Regional Correspondent, Albert Sore, which highlighted the plight of residents competing with

animals for water. “The documentary revealed heartbreaking scenes of women and children struggling daily for water alongside animals. As a responsible institution committed to touching lives, we felt compelled to intervene,” he stated.

Dr. Dzoboku further noted that Republic Bank supports four key Sustainable Development Goals through its CSR interventions, namely Health, Education, Water and Sanitation and Climate Action.

Dingoni Inauguration

At the Dingoni inauguration ceremony, the District Chief Executive, Hon. Seidu Breimeh, who represented the Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Ali Adolf John, praised the Bank for complementing government’s efforts to provide clean water to communities. “This intervention aligns with the President’s vision of ensuring access to clean water for all Ghanaians. Water remains a major challenge in this district, and this project brings great relief to the people of Dingoni,” he said.

He further urged community leaders and residents to establish a maintenance committee to ensure the proper upkeep and sustainability of the facility.

The Chief of Woribogu, Woribogu Lana Abukari, thanked Republic Bank for fulfilling its promise to the people and urged residents to maintain peace and protect the facility. According to him, “there were several communities with severe water challenges, but we selected this community because of the peace that exists here. I encourage everyone to continue living in harmony and to safeguard this important facility,” he advised.

In his remarks, Dr. Benjamin Dzoboku reiterated the importance of water to community development and highlighted the extensive efforts undertaken to ensure the success of the project. “This mechanized borehole is intended to provide consistent relief to the people, particularly women and school children who previously spent long hours searching for water. We want children to have more time to study and families to focus on productive activities,” he said.

He added that the Bank would work closely with the contractor over the next year to train community members on the operation and maintenance of the solar and electricity-powered automated borehole system to ensure sustainability. “The project reflects Republic Bank’s commitment to touching lives beyond banking,” Dr. Dzoboku concluded.

Also present at the ceremonies were Mr. Joseph L. Ashong, General Manager, Commercial and Retail Banking; Mrs. Akua Oduraa Botchway, Company Secretary; Mr. Poius Twum Barimah, Southern Sector Manager; Mrs. Genevieve Aboney, Manager, Marketing and Communications; the Branch Managers of Republic Bank’s Bolgatanga and Tamale branches, Mr. Patrick Hope Dzodzegbe and Mr. Daniel Opeku, respectively, as well as staff of the Bank.
